Adopting a Phoenix Animal
How do I adopt with Phoenix?
What does adoption mean? It is different from 'buying' an animal - adoption is about giving a second chance to an animal that needs a home.
Take a look at our Adopt a Cat or Adopt a Dog page to choose your next fluffy companion. You've fallen in love with a kitten or you'd like to give an old dog a home! Arrange to meet the animal by emailing the foster carer. We have a number of volunteer fosterers who mainly live in the Dordogne department who take care of these animals.
THE ADOPTION PROCESS - Once you have chosen your animal or they have chosen you, we will ask you some questions about your circumstances, such as whether you have a fenced garden if adopting a dog, or have any other animals etc, whether you work from home and how often you are there. Once approved, there will be forms to complete;
Firstly a Certificate of Knowledge Form, (if you don't already have one). It is a legal requirement (since 30 November 2021) in France for future owners of companion animals (cats, dogs, small mammals and equines) to have one (per person per species). Adopters must demonstrate they understand what caring for that animal involves, aiming at improving animal welfare and reducing neglect or abuse. This has to be read, understood and signed 7 days prior to collecting your animal.

An Adoption Form which has both yours and your new animal's details, our policies and agreements to be signed on the day you collect your animal.
A Sterilisation Form, if you are adopting an unsterilised animal - a kitten or puppy under 6 months old, this will need to be completed by your vet to confirm they have been sterilised and emailed back to us.
Adoption Fee
We ask for an adoption amount of 150€ for cats and kittens, and 300€ for dogs and puppies. We will ask you to bring 50euro to reserve your animal upon your first meeting. The rest can be given on collection day. If you are adopting a kitten or puppy we ask you to also bring a deposit cheque of 300euros (this will be torn up once we receive the completed and signed Sterilisation Form).

Meanwhile, you can prepare your home for the arrival of your new animal with a clean and comfortable bed, feed and water bowls, toys, and making sure that you have a calm and secure area for them! When the day finally arrives for to take your long awaited pet home, be prepared to transport them safely with a cat carrier or a dog collar and a lead.
You'll have copies of your paperwork that you completed along with their Carnet de Santa (vaccination book) and a copy of the I-CAD – microchip.

You will need to register your animal at your local vets. Some vets can be booked up in advance so make sure that you book an appointment immediately for them to have their 2nd and/or 3rd vaccination if they haven't had them already. If you miss the 4 week window you will have to start the double vaccination process again. Don't forget to also schedule an appointment for them to be sterilised at around 5 - 6 months old. Your vet will need to complete our Sterilisation Form and this needs to be emailed or posted back to us and we will transfer the microchip (i-CAD) registration into your name and contact information. This is required by law.

REMEMBER - some animals need time to settle into their new environment, especially if they have been abandoned, abused or a kitten or puppy who have left the comfort of their siblings and mother.

You must keep your animal indoors until they have had all of 3 of their vaccinations otherwise they will be exposed to diseases, especially cats. Ideally, it is best to keep them indoors until they are sterilised.

THANK YOU FOR ADOPTING FROM US AND HELPING TO SAVE OUR ANIMALS!
